Job Description
Performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances. Works under supervision and performs a wide variety of law enforcement and public safety duties including patrol, investigation, and community engagement. Officers may be assigned to various duties or specialized assignments by the Chief of Police or designee.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Enforces Town Ordinances, Colorado State laws, and Federal laws; provides general police services.
- Patrols assigned areas to preserve the peace, protect life and property, and prevent crime.
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, including accidents, disturbances, and criminal incidents.
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of crimes; gathers, preserves, and documents evidence.
- Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects; prepares detailed reports and case documentation.
- Makes lawful arrests and processes prisoners according to Department procedures.
- Conducts traffic enforcement, including issuing citations and investigating traffic accidents.
- Provides first aid and assistance at accident scenes and other emergencies.
- Prepares a variety of reports, records, and forms related to law enforcement activities.
- Testifies in court and administrative hearings as required.
- Maintains contact with the public to promote positive community relations and provide assistance.
- Assists citizens with issues such as crime prevention, traffic safety, and public concerns.
- Coordinates activities with other officers, supervisors, and agencies as needed.
- Operates police vehicles, communications equipment, and other law enforcement tools.
- Works rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and Town laws and Department policies.
- Maintains proficiency in firearms, defensive tactics, and other required skills.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- May be assigned additional duties such as investigations, traffic enforcement, or community policing.
- Participates in training programs and continuing education.
- Maintains Department equipment, uniforms, and issued gear.
- Assists with community outreach and public safety programs.
- May be required to carry a Department-issued phone for duty-related purposes.

Works under the general supervision of a Sergeant or other designated supervisor.

Education and Experience
- Must be Colorado POST certified (or able to obtain certification).
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree or higher in a related field preferred.
- Prior law enforcement experience preferred but not required for entry-level candidates.
General
- Must meet Peace Officer Certification standards as described in Colorado law and P.O.S.T. regulations.
- Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license.
- No felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions as specified by Colorado law or Department policy.
- Must be able to read and write the English language.
- External candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Skill in operating law enforcement tools and equipment.
- Ability to learn and apply laws, ordinances, and Department policies.
- Ability to maintain physical fitness necessary for law enforcement duties.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in stressful and rapidly changing situations.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to learn the Town’s geography.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness to meet Department standards for ethical behavior.
- Willingness to use physical and deadly force when legally justified and necessary.
- Willingness to work shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to testify in court or hearings.
- May be required to carry a firearm off duty.
Tools and Equipment Used
Police car, police radio, handgun and other weapons as required, first aid equipment, personal computer including office software and any other necessary police equipment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Vision may be corrected.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee spends long periods in police cars. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts in high/precarious places and with explosives. You may occasionally be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. You also may be required to carry a Town cell phone for immediate recall to duty at any time.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Salary
Starting Range: $63,267.00 to $76,962.83 depending on qualifications and experience at the rank of Sergeant or above.
