Vehicles and Trailers with Missing or Damaged VIN Numbers

If the VIN number on your vehicle is missing, damaged, or unreadable, a Colorado Assigned ID (DR 2408)  will be required. This is most common on trailers and older vehicles that have been restored. For vehicles manufactured after 1981, the VIN is located on the driver’s side, where the dash meets the bottom of the windshield.

For trailers, the inspector will verify the VIN condition and provide the appropriate paperwork.

When restoring a vehicle, do not remove any VIN numbers. If repainting or performing other restoration work, tape over the VIN plates and handle them carefully to avoid damage or making the information unreadable. If the VIN plate appears tampered with to the inspector, a Colorado Assigned ID (DR 2408)  will be required. Tampering with VIN plates is a Class 5 Felony.
